The Castle of Maarten Maartens House - Doorn - Utrecht
Maarten Maartens House was built in 1902 in the Dutch village of Doorn (Utrecht province).
In the 1900’s many estates, castles and country homes were built around Doorn at the Utrechtse Heuvelrug. The Castle at Landgoed Zonheuvel was named in honour of the famous Dutch writer Maarten Maarten, who was the first inhabitant of the house. In 1884 he bought the land in Doorn. However, he spent many years of his life abroad. He spent 12 years of his life in the house from 1903 until his death in 1915 together with his wife Anna and their daughter Ada.
The Castle of Maarten Maartens House was built in 1840, next to the original small house where Maarten Maarten used to live together with his family. The beautiful garden behind the house was originated to the Versailles French style. The butler stayed in the gatehouse which later was also used for horses and named in Koetshuis (Coach house). It is still named the Koetshuis today. Here you can find lots of unique and special historical documents, such as a map of Bernard Du Roy from 1696.
In the beginning of the 20th century, after Anna`s death, the daughter Ada established the Foundation of Zonheuvel. At first this foundation functioned as a center for some meetings and work. During the World War II the emergency hospital was based here. Ada died in that hospital in 1944. In 1974, the Foundation of J. Slotemaker Brown Institute bought Maarten Maartens House. Today, it is functioning as a unique place for meetings & conference, wedding, special events and celebrations.
